Our Stakeholder Approach

The Indian performing arts spaces is a community of diverse stakeholders and we believe they all play an important role. While fostering healthy communications between all stakeholders, no one will be left behind in conversations surrounding ethical conduct.

Our Organization is for Everyone

Our approach seeks to establish best practices for each stakeholder within the Indian performing arts community and identify interactions they may be responsible for. We acknowledge that a person can occupy multiple stakeholder roles within the arts.

These stakeholders include but are not limited to:

  • Students

  • Teachers

  • Parents

  • Organizers: performance & tour organizers

  • Artistes

  • Connoisseurs

  • Artiste hosts

  • Supporting roles (make up artistes, technicians, etc)

What did the #metoo movement reveal about our community?

#MeToo in the Indian performing arts revealed difficult truths about our community and the ways in which it needs repair.

Part of the motivation behind the formation of CAREspaces came from an understanding that problems of sexual/nonsexual misconduct are pervasive and deep-rooted in the Indian performing arts. Below, we contextualize these problems and show you how the pillars and services of CAREspaces stemmed from the areas in which we felt our community needs repair and recovery.

Honest and constructive conversations about these events are hard to have, rare, and often avoided.

Our community lacks infrastructure and vocabulary to process and respond effectively to the problems that surfaced. Our conversations often do not prioritize survivor's healing.

How does CAREspaces address these gaps?

  • Our peer support program promotes honest and constructive conversations that prioritize survivor healing but also allows any member of our community to contextualize and express anything that makes them uncomfortable.

  • Tools for Learning is a list of recommendations that articulates normalized behaviors between stakeholders based on anecdotes and personal experiences within our team. We know these recommendations are not exhaustive or representative of every instance of discomfort or misconduct between stakeholders. These recommendations will continue to evolve as we have more conversations! We hope this resource is a conversation-starter within our community as well!

This community tends to react on a case-by-case basis rather than finding long-term preventative measures for systemic issues.

Systemic weaknesses in our community are normalized without repercussion or accountability.

How does CAREspaces address these gaps?

  • We have articulated several normalized, systemic issues based on interactions between stakeholders.

We primarily rely on organizations and people with visibility to create actionable change.

During the initial outcry, the petition allowed hundreds of allies to show their support; however, they were not given direction on how to actively stay involved.

High visibility organizations did not prioritize safety and accountability in tangible and transparent ways. Available reporting services are riddled with conflicts of interest and lack credibility.

How does CAREspaces address these gaps?

  • We provide direction for each stakeholder so that realistic and robust solutions can be designed and implemented, and members of our space always know how they can be part of the change they want to see.

We assume superior talent implies superior morality. We are confused when that is not the case.

Members of our community are asked to trust the spaces they work in without questioning its safety.

Survivors are blamed for not coming forward earlier or “letting it go wrong.” We often find ways to pardon the behavior of the accused because it is easier for us to ask why harmed individuals could not do better.

How does CAREspaces address these gaps?

  • In this series, we feature discussions on ethical conduct and safety within Indian arts professional spaces.

You will hear the voices various stakeholders from diverse regions and backgrounds.

Members of our space do not want to ask questions when an issues has not affected them directly.

This community silently perpetuates problems due to passive involvement without realizing the impact of its actions.

  • We believe that every member of our community has a role in demanding accountability and safety. This core belief forms the foundation of our Stakeholder Approach.

  • Tools for Learning is home to a set of recommendations based on optimizing interactions between stakeholders.
